Starting her studies in the 70’s at the City and Guilds in London Sally has had a lifelong interest in the anatomy of the natural world. Being the great grand daughter of the famous sculptor Harry Bates, it was only a matter of time before Sally discovered clay as her chosen medium. Previously Sally has been a successful dog portrait artist, milliner, painter of fine china and now sculptor. Based at her studio in Perthshire, Sally has all her works cast at Powderhall in Edinburgh. She is currently working on various projects and happily takes on commissions of pets, birds and animals.
It is helpful, but not essential, to have been introduced to the sitter and take photographs myself, which gives me the opportunity to observe the character. If this is not possible, I am happy to work from photographs taken by others. All my work is cast in bronze offering a wide scope for patinated finishes to suit the subject. I currently use Caithness stone for my sculpture bases, which imparts a lovely sense of solidity and permanence.
